“Prohibiting pride is a European shame”
Budapest has become a meeting of international politicians who have landed in the Hungarian capital to go to pride forbidden by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Among them there is a delegation of Spaniards and about 70 euros of the left, Renew, the Greens and the Socialists and Democrats, who have organized this Friday afternoon an act in defense of LGTBIQ rights in the city.
“It that Orbán has done is not a simple attack on the LGTBIQ+community. It is not a simple political disagreement. The prohibition of pride is a European shame, ”Garcia said in his speech during the meeting that the party entitled“ prohibited by law, backed by love. ”The event has had the initial intervention of several European socialists and then giving way to the celebration of a round table with activists who have discussed the prohibition of pride and the setback of LGTBIQ rights in Hungary.
Garcia has claimed a more active role in the European Commission before the country governed by Fidesz, which has been approved by years that impact hard on the LGTBIQ community. “How many more red lines should be closed before the European Commission makes a real decision? We need political courage. No statements, nothing evasive, but courage. That means requesting precautionary measures from the Court of Justice to stop this law immediately,” said the socialist after Ursula von der Layen has made statements in which he asks the Government of Fidesz to be held.
“This is not just about Hungary, it is the soul of Europe. Every time an rainbow flag is prohibited, a part of our democracy vanishes,” Garcia added. The Veto of the Prime Minister to the Arcoíris demonstration is the last chapter of a long list of LGTBIQ rights cuts in the country. In May, a majority of countries in the European Union, including Spain, seconded a statement against the veto of the LGTBIQ demonstration and claimed the European Commission to initiate the mechanisms at their disposal to avoid it.
Shortly before Garcia's intervention, Hungarian Eurodiputada Klára Dobrev welcomed the attendees and thanked the support of international delegations to Hungarian pride. “It is very encouraging to see all the representatives of the European left demonstrating,” he said before adding that the demonstration of this June 28, that the mayor of Budapest has summoned with the LGTBIQ groups as a municipal event, “it will be a demonstration that being European also means being free and that the Hungarians want to be.”
The event has also intervened the president of the European Committee of the Regions, Kata Tüttő, which among other things has called to “make memory” of Budapest and Hungary and remember that on June 28 it is not only the day of pride for the Hungarians, also “The Day of Freedom” in which the departure of the Soviet troops of the country is commemorated in 1991, a reference that the mayor Gergely Karáscany has also named during this afternoon's press conference. “Budapest has always fought for its freedom because it is a free city,” he said before giving way to conversation with activists Dajana Bakić, president of Rainbow Rose and Dorottya Rédai, director of the Hungarian Association Labrisz Lesbian. The meeting has been moderated by the vice president of the Social Democrats, Ana Catarina Mendes.
